Gold Investing StrategiesWhich gold coins are best for investing?
When you purchase physical gold, the two most popular forms are gold bullion and gold coins. One of the advantages of gold coins is that they are sometimes treated differently than bullions, especially when it comes to transporting them.
If you’re thinking about investing in gold coins, here are the most popular coins (which means they will also be the easiest to re-sell when it comes time to cash out). Krugerrand – The most popular gold bullion coin, with over 1400 tonnes worth of them in circulation. It’s made out of a gold and copper alloy (8.33% copper), so it can’t be held in some retirement accounts, which require a higher degree of purity for gold bullion. The Krugerrand is available with 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, or 1/10 oz of gold. Australian Gold Nugget (Kangaroo) – Minted at the Perth Mint, this gold coin is available in denominations of 1/20th of an ounce, 1/10th oz, ¼ oz, ½ oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kilo (1000 ounces). They are legal tender coins and are 99.99% pure gold. Austrian Philharmonic – Available in 1/10 oz, ¼ oz, ½ oz, and 1 ounce, these coins have a face value of 10 Euros to 100 Euros. They are 999.9 fine gold, although there are also silver versions of this coin. Canadian Gold Maple Leaf – This is one of the purest gold coins available. It’s normally available in .9999 fine; however, some special issues are .99999 fine. It’s available in 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, ¼ oz, ½ oz, and 1 ounce. In 1994 only, it was also available in 1/15 oz. They are legal tender coins, ranging from a face value of one dollar through 50 dollars. Platinum versions are available, and, if you contact the Royal Canadian Mint, you can special order a 100 kilogram 99.999% pure gold version. Chinese Gold Panda – Since 1982, China has been producing their gold panda coins in the sizes 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, ¼ oz, ½ oz, and 1 oz. The panda design has changed every year (except 2002). Even though this coin is issued in an almost Proof like state (normally only done with collectible coins), they are legal tender denominated in Chinese Yuan. Mexico Gold 50 Peso – First issued in 1921, this gold coin only comes in one size, 37.59 grams of gold (1.20565 troy ounces). The Mexico Gold 50 Peso coin contains 10% copper alloy, and is not intended as legal tender (even though it does have a 50 Peso denomination stamped on it). British Sovereign – Minted since 1817, the British Sovereign contain .2354 troy ounces of gold. These coins were also available as half sovereigns, double sovereigns, and quintuple sovereigns. They do have a nominal value of one pound; however, they have almost always been used as bullion. American Gold Eagle – The gold eagle, which contain 8.33% silver and copper alloys, can be found in 1/10 oz, ¼ oz, ½ oz, and 1 oz denominations. They have a face value ranging from 5 Dollars to 50 Dollars, and are actually legal tender. American Buffalo – With a legal tender face value of $50, these 1 ounce gold coins are .9999 pure gold.
