With the price of gold reaching record highs, you may be one of many people who are considering investing in gold for the first time. But how should you invest? Should you buy shares in gold ETFs, gold bullion, numismatic gold coins?

Many people prefer to buy physical gold. There are valid concerns that many ETFs may claim to own more gold than they actually do. With all the financial manipulations that have occurred over the last several years (think about the failures of banks due to real estate mortgage fraud), this may be a real concern.

If you want to buy “physical” gold - gold that you actually have in your hands – what form should you choose?

You have three basic choices; bullion bars, bullion coins, and numismatic coins. Making a good decision on the form of gold to buy will pay off when it comes time to sell your gold.

The form will also affect the amount of the “premium over spot” you’ll need to pay. Whatever the current price of gold is on the commodities market, you’ll pay a little bit more than that (usually one to four percent over the current price) in order to get physical gold.

Gold bullion bars: These vary in size from 1 gram to 400 ounces. You are best off if you get your bars in a sealed package, with an assay card. To make it easier to re-sell your gold bars in the future, choose bars that are manufactured by a major refinery, such as Pamp Suisse, Credit Suisse, the Perth Mint, or Johnson Matthey. This is one place where name-brand recognition is handy. These manufacturers are recognized around the world.

Bullion bars are also generally the cheapest way to buy gold. They are often available with the lowest premium over spot.

Gold bullion coins: Another way to buy gold at close to the market price is with bullion coins. These coins are not rare, but are just a convenient way to keep gold. Common gold coins in this category are Krugerrands, American Gold Eagles, Canadian Gold Maple Leafs, Austrian Philharmonics, Chinese Gold Pandas, and Mexican 50 Peso coins. These coins are well recognized by gold buyers, and should be easy to re-sell when you are ready to cash out of your investment.

Gold numismatic coins: This is generally something best left to the experts. When buying numismatic gold coins, you are paying a large premium over what you would for the same amount of gold in a bar or bullion coin. You are paying more for the rarity and age of the coin.

Unfortunately, in hard economic times, you may only be able to sell these coins for the value of the gold in them. Even if the price of gold has gone up significantly, you could still end up losing money.

Overview

If you want to have some gold handy, you should start with the basics: bullion bars and bullion coins. Shop around to find where you can buy them with the lowest premiums and delivery charges. Once you’ve built a solid foundation with these, you may want to take a chance on some numismatic gold coins later.
