Wars has been fought for it, while love is also being declared it. This is how this precious yellow metal is being valued in the past and even these days. Gold has been first used for aesthetic purposes or for making jewelries. ~~

The first time I saw a 24-karat gold was when my father game a ring to my Mon. I remember it having a bright yellow shine. I got confused when I heard that there are also other colors of gold like red, blue, white, green and even black.

Differently colored gold are called gold alloy which basically that pure gold is added with other metal. Alloys make gold to look differently and or to harden the metal to be used for jewelries. This is reason why we see marking on most jewelries like 18 K, 14K, 10K. This indicates the gold purity in a piece where 24K is the pure or one hundred percent.

Some metals are added to gold to give more strength and a particular color. A white gold alloy is a mix of gold and at least one white metal which is usually nickel, manganese or palladium, and the common formulation is with 90% gold and of nickel, in weight. Gold with the reddish, pinkish or with rose color is gold mixed with copper. The more the copper, the stronger the red coloration the alloy becomes. When silver is added to gold, it produces a greenish alloy. Purple gold need aluminum while deep blue gold need some amount of indium.

Gold alloys have different characteristics, adding too much or too little of other metals could make the piece too soft, hard, or even brittle. Gold mixing technologies are developing continuously and in the future, we may see gold more colors to please our eyes.
