Gold gold is not the only precious metal valued highly these days. Rare earth mineral are also demand for their use in sophisticated electronic gadgets and high tech appliances. And these these precious metal are seen to be abundant in the ocean floors. Japanese researchers say that they have unraveled a vast deposits of these minerals in the mud of the Pacific Ocean floor. They estimate to about 100 billion tons. China is the top producers of these rare earth minerals, at around 97% of the worlds needs. China's dominance could change if the recovery of the minerals from the ocean seabed would be commercially viable. The British journal Nature Geo-science reported that a team of scientists led by Yasuhiro Kato, an associate professor of earth science at the University of Tokyo, found the minerals in sea mud at 78 locations. "The deposits have a heavy concentration of rare earths elements and the metal yttrium. Just one square kilometre (0.4 square mile) of deposits will be able to provide one-fifth of the current global annual consumption," said Kato. These mineral were found at depths of 3,500 to 6,000 meters below that ocean floor. A third of the site yielded rich contents of these rare earths. The deposit are in the international waters in east and west of Hawaii, and in east of Tahiti in French Polynesia. The amounts of the rare earths in the deposits could amount to 80 to 100 billion tonnes. This contradicts that US Geological Survey that estimated that global reserves to be just around 110 million tonnes which is mainly found rich countries like China, Russia and other former Soviet countries, and the United States. China was used it's monopoly of rare earth production during a territorial dispute with Japan and restrained its supply. This has prompted Japan to look for new sources of the rare earth minerals. There is the growing number mining companies seeking to dig through the Pacific Ocean floor. A listed company Nautilus has the first license to mine the floor of the Bismarck and Solomon oceans around Papua New Guinea. They would be focusing on recovering seafloor massive sulphide which high in copper and good. You can talk about...
